The Boy’s Cries

Third Sunday after Pentecost – 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time – June 25, 2017

The story of Abraham is one of call; God’s call to Abraham. It is a story of Promise; God promises to make Abraham the father of many nations or people. It is also a call to Faith; God asks Abraham to be faithful, to trust God with his life. And this is where the train went off of the tracks. Abraham couldn’t be faithful.

Promises, Promises

Second Sunday after Pentecost, June 18, 2017, Father’s Day

In God, we rest secure that God’s promises will come to be, just as they did for Sarah and Abraham. At the Lord’s table we see God’s promises fulfilled. Our Father gave his Son to keep the promise that in Christ you have life. God is the perfect promise keeper.

In the Beginning

Trinity Sunday, June 11, 2017

First in a sermon series on Genesis.

In the beginning God. That is how Genesis begins. It begins with God. It always begins with God, not us. As a matter of fact, it’s never about us. It is always about God.

Thoughtful Gifts

Pentecost, Sunday, June 4th, 2017

Gifts are given by God through the power of the Holy Spirit. These spiritual gifts are exciting, thoughtful, and lovingly given. God knows us more deeply than anyone else. God knows us more deeply than we know ourselves. The gifts God gives us are the truest gifts we could ever receive.

Why Were YOU Given the Gift of Life?

A Sermon for Memorial Day ~ Sunday, May 28th, 2017

Why are you here? Out of all of the possibilities at the time of your conception, why were you given the gift of life? Was it by accident or design or a little of both? And, while we are pondering, “What is your Purpose in being here?”

Spiritual But Not Religious

May 21st, 2017 – 6th Sunday of Easter

When Sue and I were in seminary my wife took a theology class taught by Dr. Harold Niebelsick. Dr. Niebelsick had served as a chaplain in West Berlin shortly after World War II and had the enviable opportunity to meet many of the leading German theologians of the 20th century; Tillich, Barth, Bultmann and the like.

One day a new student asked Dr. Niebelsick if Islam, Jews, Buddhists and others worshiped the same God. Dr. Niebelsick slowly took off his glasses and leaned over his lectern before asking, “Please tell me, sir, just how many gods do you think there are?!”
